Ockham's razor in interval identification

چکیده
Since real-life measurements cannot be absolutely precise, we never know the precise value of a physical quantity, we only know an interval of its ix~ssible values. Due m this uncertainty, there are several different models that are consistent with the same measurement results. Which model should we ch(x~se? in this paper, we show that Ockham's raz~w principle (Emitim 4umld m~t be m~dtiplial ~anwe.eawu'~/y) (an lead to a natural criterion for choosing a mlxtel. As an example, we apply this criterion to data processing related to a reasonably simple psychological problem.

Ockham's Razor and its Improper Use
"Ockham's razor" is a methodical principle, due to the medieval philosopher William of Ockham, who mainly opposed an unjustified creation of new terms in philosophy. Since this principle and its later versions are frequently quoted in discussions about anomalies, it will be studied here in some detail. After a short look on the historical roots, the principal modern formulations are summarized....
متن کاملOckham's razor is not so sharp
A 39-year-old male with newly diagnosed HIV had cavitary pneumonia initially attributed to Pneumocystis jirovecii but actually caused by Rhodococcus equi. After neurological deterioration, he was found to have intracerebral lesions caused by Toxoplasma gondii. This case underscores the inability to rely on the search for a unifying diagnosis (Ockham's Razor) in HIV-infected patients.
متن کاملAdiposopathy, “Sick Fat,” Ockham’s Razor, and Resolution of the Obesity Paradox
Among lean populations, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is rare. Among those with increased adiposity, CVD is the commonest cause of worldwide death. The "obesity paradox" describes seemingly contrary relationships between body fat and health/ill-health. Multiple obesity paradoxes exist, and include the anatomic obesity paradox, physiologic obesity paradox, demographic obesity paradox, therapeutic...
متن کاملOckham's razor and reasoning about information flow
What is the minimal algebraic structure to reason about information flow? Do we really need the full power of Boolean algebras with co-closure and de Morgan dual operators? Howmuch canweweaken and still be able to reason about multi-agent scenarios in a tidy compositional way? This paper provides some answers.
متن کاملOckham's broom: A new series
Although it is increasingly difficult to gauge what people can be expected to know, it is probably safe to assume that most readers are familiar with Ockham's razor – roughly, the principle whereby gratuitous suppositions are shaved from the interpretation of facts – enunciated by a Franciscan monk, William of Ockham, in the fourteenth century. Ockham's broom is a somewhat more recent conceit, ...
